History of German Shepherd Dogs

The German Shepherd Dog hails from Germany and was developed at the turn of the 20th century. The breed wasdeveloped by Max von Steveryphanitz, a cavalry officer and dog breeder. The development of the German Shepherd Dog occurred when many people sought to standardize breeds, especially herding breeds. Local shepherd dogs in Germany were used in the development of this breed, and the breed was initially created for the herding of sheep.

The process involved selectively breeding dogs who had superior abilities including speed, intelligence, and strength. Today, the German Shepherd Dog is often perceived more as a working dog, commonly viewed as a police dog, military dog, or service dog. This is due to the breed's physical abilities and intelligence. The breed is also used as a guard dog for protection of homes, and is equally a fantastic loving family dog.

Types and Colors of German Shepherd Dogs

Many know German Shepherds by a particular look and color, often seeing them as Black & Tan. However, German Shepherds come in a variety of colors and coat length. German Shepherds can have a variety of colors, including black, sable, grey, and combinations of black and other colors, such as black & tan, and black & silver. While German Shepherds tend to have a standard coat length, the breed can have long hair, which is a rarer trait. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a slight deviation from the breed standard, but are stillrecognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC)and registered by the organization.

Are German Shepherds Good Family Dogs?

Yes, absolutely. If you are thinking of bringing home an all around loving, caring, and capable companion, look no further than the German Shepherd breed. Despite their image as muscular, intense dogs, German Shepherds are in fact gentle pets. German Shepherds are known for their loyalty, intelligence, obedience, and trainability -- qualities that are critical to any family. This breed is also great with toddlers and older children, making it a great fit for families with kids. Even more, they are such loyal companions that they will carefully look after your child as a guardian dog -- as if he or she is their own child!

How Much Does a German Shepherd Cost?

A German Shepherd pup can be as cheap as $900 and as expensive as $4,500, with an average price of around $2,000. The price of a German Shepherd puppy for sale varies depending on the location of the breeder, the pedigree of the puppy's mom and dad, quality of breeding practices (e.g. genetic testing), and other factors. While the breed hails from Europe, there are many incredible German Shepherd breeders in the United States. Good breeders can have long waiting lists that span months or years.

Finding a Reputable German Shepherd Breeder

There are many responsible German Shepherd breeders across the United States, Canada, and Europe. These breeders are dedicated to the breed standard and to raising healthy puppies for sale. Many of these breeders own a breeding stock of female parents or studs who are club registered or are from a championship bloodline.

When finding a new German Shepherd puppy and selecting a breeder, it is important that you pursue a strict vetting process. Reputable breeders focus exclusively on one or a few breeds, are passionate and informed about these breed, and follow important health, safety, and socialization practices. At Mawoo Pets, our network of 1,000+ breeders is diligently screened to ensure high breeding standards and to eliminate any puppy mills. You can alsosearch for puppiesnear your surrounding area by checking puppies in your Zip or Postal Code. As you consider a specific breeder, it is a good idea to collect as much information from them as possible, including on the breeding parents, litter, and asking for pictures of the breeding space. When you find the right breeder, check what training programs they offer for your new puppy.

If you seek a dog who will serve as a guide dog service dog, or for personal protection as a watch dog, ask the seller for reputable training programs. Given the incredible trainability of German Shepherd puppies, your new pup can be well-trained from a young age to follow the right commands and support your family in the way you need most.

How are German Shepherds for Guarding or Hunting?

German Shepherds make great Guard dogs. They are natural police dogs and have an instinct to protect, alongside a strong sense of smell and outstanding physical abilities. If you are looking for a guard dog but would like to explore other similar breeds, consider a Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Malinois, Rottweiler, or Doberman Pinscher. American Pit Bull Terriers can also be great family protectors. German Shepherd Dogs do not make for good hunting dogs. Their breeding history is oriented towards herding and working. If you are looking for a breed of German origin who serves as a good hunting companion, consider the German Shorthaired Pointer.

Health and Care for German Shepherds

Ethical dog breeders are careful to screen their breeding parents for health issues that are common to the German Shepherd breed. As a pure breed, the German Shepherd suffers from some health problems, including hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and gastric dilatation. As you select a reputable breeder, collect information on his or her breeding practices to ensure the puppies are raised in good health. Ideally, a breeder can show you genetic testing of the breeding parents, and recent veterinary records certifying the good health of the parents.

One of the best ways to housebreak your new puppy is by using a large crate. A crate can keep your puppy safe, get him or her accustomed to your home, and ensure that he is secure while you sleep at night. That said, make sure to only keep your puppy in the crate for a few hours a day, as longer timeframes can make them bored and exhibit destructive behavior.
