The Golden Retriever is a breed of Scottish origin. Sir Dudley Marjoribank, who later became Baron or Lord Tweedmouth, developed this breed in the late 1800s in the Scottish Highlands. The Golden Retriever breed was developed from a combination of flat-coated retrievers and the Tweed Water Spaniel, a breed that is now extinct. These breeds may have been mixed with the Red Setter and Labrador Retriever in the development of the Golden Retriever.
Golden Retrievers were first recognized by the Kennel Club (of the United Kingdom) in 1913 and by the American Kennel Club in 1925. These amazing dogs are one of the most popular breeds across Europe, Canada, and America, given their kind, loving, and affectionate nature. While most view the Golden Retriever as a family dog, this breed also makes an excellent working dog, guide dog, and hunting companion for retrieving game.
The Golden Retriever has a characteristically happy face, floppy ears, and wavy coat. According to the American Kennel Club, theGolden Retriever typically weighs 55 to 75 pounds and stands 21 to 24 inches tall.
There are three varieties of Golden Retriever: The American Golden Retriever, Canadian Golden Retriever, and British Golden Retriever. These three types of Golden Retriever vary slightly in physical appearance but have similar temperament, energy, trainability, and health profiles.
American Golden Retrievers come in all shades of gold and have long and wavey coats. The AKC recognizes Dark Golden, Golden, and Light Golden as the three official colors of this breed. Canadian Golden Retrievers are known for their darker coat, often a dark gold or brown color. Not only is their fur darker, but it is also shorter and lighter than their American counterpart’s. English Golden Retrievers are known for their long and smooth cream-colored coats. Despite the prevalence of the white coat in the English variety, the UK's Kennel Club recognizes any shade of gold or cream for this breed. English Golden Retrievers also tend to be a bit smaller in size than their American counterparts.
Whether you get an English Cream Golden Retriever puppy or a near-brown Canadian Goldie, they will have adorable floppy ears and a kind, friendly, and loyal personality.
Golden Retrievers are a high-shedding breed. They shed heavily twice a year in the spring and the fall. Outside of these periods, they still shed but less frequently. Your Golden Retriever pup requires brushing twice or more time in a week. In high-shedding season, the brushing should be done daily to help manage dead skin and fur, and to prevent getting too much fur released in your home.
Given their shedding frequency, this breed is not a great fit for families with allergic or asthmatic members. If you have an allergic family member, your best bet would be to find a hypoallergenic breed, perhaps a Golden Retriever mix such as a Goldendoodle puppy for sale.
Golden Retriever puppies posted for sale on Mawoo Pets usually cost $1,000 to $2,500. The price varies depending on the size and color of the breed, experience of the breeder, the breeder's location, and demand at that time of the year for the breed, amongst other factors.
Golden Retrievers make excellent family dogs. This is why they are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. This breed is playful and enjoys spending time with toddlers, small children, and older children alike. They love to provide companionship and are happy playing with your kids throughout the day.
Golden Retrievers do require a fair amount of daily exercise. As such, they are ideally raised in a home with a backyard or open outdoor space. However, this breed will fare fine in apartments or smaller spaces so long as it receives enough daily activity.
Given the intelligence of this breed, your Golden Retriever puppy can be trained from an early age to become a guide dog, therapy dog, or working companion. Their trainability and trustworthy disposition make them a perfect match for such roles, and especially for disabled individuals in need of a service dog. If you are considering a Golden Retriever for such purposes, look for an experienced breeder who offers a puppy training program. These programs can range from 6 to 12 weeks and will prepare your puppy as a guide dog or service dog before arriving at your home.
Some health and genetic conditions are more common in Golden Retrievers. These include joint problems such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. They also include eye, ear, and skin problems such as retinal dysplasia, ear infections, and ichthyosis. Golden Retrievers are also predisposed to Subaortic Stenosis, which is a heart condition that can lead to fatigue and lightheadedness of your puppy.
Given the prevalence of these conditions, it is important that you schedule at least an annual checkup for your pup and have his or her eyes, hips, elbows, and heart checked. Risk factors considered, the lifespan of a Golden Retriever is usually 10-12 years.
Ethical breeders have designed breeding programs that screen for these common health problems. They use genetic testing to vet for common genetic issues. Additionally, they will conduct regular veterinary checks of their breeding parents and will deliberately breed out common health problems from their puppies.
Some Golden Retrievers breeders follow specific pedigrees and raise litters that trace back to championship bloodlines. In such instances, the breeder can provide you important genetic information about the breeding parents and grandparents of your puppy. This information can help you understand your puppy's health risks which you can share with your veterinarian.
