The Doberman Pinscher was developed in the late 1800s by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann in Thueringen, Germany. Karl Dobermann was a tax collector and dogcatcher who wanted to create a breed that was protective and fearless, yet a companion. To accomplish this, he mixed a few breeds to develop the Doberman, including the German Shepherd Dog, the Rottweiler, and the Greyhound. The resulting breed was not only protective in nature, but also very intelligent and loyal, given the attributes of the ancestor breeds. By the early 1900s, the Doberman Pinscher had made its way to America, and it became recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908.
With early training and socialization, Dobermans can make excellent family dogs. This breed is intelligent, loyal, and protective, and can make a wonderful family companion or family guardian. That said, Dobermans are both strong-willed and dominant in nature; this can make them not the best choice for families with young kids. Additionally, if you are an inexperienced dog owner, this breed might not be the best fit for you given its training and exercise needs. If you choose to bring home a Doberman pup, it’s critical to provide him/her early obedience training and frequent mental and physical stimulation to prevent destructive behaviors.
Yes, Doberman Pinschers typically rank as one of the smartest dog breeds. This breed was developed from other highly intelligent breeds including the German Shepherd Dog and the Rottweiler. Given their intelligence, Dobermans can be easily trained, socialized, and learn commands quickly. It is for this reason that Dobermans are often used as working dogs for the police, military, and for search and rescue missions.
Dobermans are highly intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. As such, they are very trainable and respond well to positive reinforcement. Given this breed’s confidence and strong will, it is important to train your Doberman pup from a young age, and to continuously use praise, treats, and play to reward good behavior.
Doberman Pinscher puppies for sale typically cost $2,000 to $4,500. This is one of the more expensive dog breeds given its high demand. The ultimate price of a Doberman puppy depends on the breeder’s experience and certifications, the puppy’s pedigree, genetic testing of the breeding parents, and additional services provided by the breeder (such as training). If you are considering bringing home a Doberman pup, consider not only the purchase price, but ongoing costs. Raising a healthy and well-tempered Doberman pup requires you to invest in training, nutritious food, and medical care, which can add up to thousands of dollars annually.
There are many rescues dedicated to re-homing Dobermans. It is best to start with an adoption agency in your city or state. Examples of city-oriented Doberman rescues include the Doberman Rescue Pack in Seattle or the Atlanta Doberman Pinscher Rescue. Some agencies operate at the state level, such as the Doberman Rescue of North Texas and theIllinois Doberman Rescue. If you don’t have luck finding a Doberman pup at these local rescues, you can also check out the Doberman Rescue League, which is a nationwide organization run by volunteers. As you choose a dog, check with the adoption agency if your Doberman will need behavioral training or ongoing medical care. These can carry additional costs beyond the adoption fee.
The first step to finding a happy, healthy Doberman puppy is identifying a reputable breeder of Doberman Pinschers. You can start by asking for recommendations from friends and family who own Dobermans, or a veterinarian who works with Doberman breeders. You can also check breeder listings at your local or national Doberman clubs, such as theDoberman Pinscher Club of America, which is the only AKC-recognized Doberman club in the United States.
Once you find a potential Doberman breeder, you need to research the breeder to understand his/her practices and standards. You should ideally pay a visit to the breeding facility to ensure that:
