The Irish Setter is a two-centuries-old bird hunting dog used in Ireland and Great Britain to locate game with its excellent sense of smell. Trainers taught Irish Setters and other types of Setters to "set" down on their bellies when they found game birds. These large dogs stand over 2 feet high and weigh between 60 and 70 pounds. They need plenty of room to grow and stretch their powerful legs, and they do well in homes with large yards or farmland. Irish Setters are sweet and easily trained, which makes them great family dogs.

It’s possible that nearly all of those early dogs were replaced by European-bred species after the 17th century, except for the coyote—a member of the dog family! Today the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed in California, followed by the French Bulldog and the German Shepherd.
