The Black and Tan Coonhound is a visually striking breed, boasting a glossy black coat with rich tan markings. These dogs have sturdy builds and are bred for rigorous outdoor activity, making them ideal for active families. They are extraordinarily charming, possessing a gentle nature coupled with an eager-to-please personality. Although they require regular exercise to stave off boredom, they are low-maintenance in terms of grooming. Keep in mind, their independent streak may sometimes challenge training, but consistent, positive reinforcement methods should have your Coonhound walking obediently by your side in no time.

Like they say, Texas is big on everything—including dogs. Doggies vacationing in the Lone Star State can look forward to wide-open vistas, plentiful parks and beaches, and welcoming accommodations. Whether you and your dog are into the shopping and café scene of urban modernity, or you prefer hiking trails and campgrounds, you’ll never run out of fun things to do in Texas. Nature lovers can check out the Barton Creek Greenbelt Preserve in Austin, the Arboretum and Nature Center in Houston, or the Palo Curo Canyon State Park. Dogs should be on-leash, but they are welcome to hike and stay alongside their owners in outdoor public spaces.
The Blue Lacy has been Texas’ official state dog since 2005.
The most popular breed of dog among pet owners in Texas is the Golden Retriever.
Mutt’s Canine Cantina, with locations throughout Texas, features a restaurant-adjacent dog park and menu items for your canine companions!
