The Poodle's origins are rooted in Germany and France, where the breed is called "Pudel" and "Caniche", respectively. The breed was used by hunters to retrieve waterfowls such as geese and duck from the waters. In fact, the term "Pudel" derives from a Germanic term meaning "to splash", given the breed's history rooted in waters.
While the exact origins of the Poodle are debated, the breed is officially recognized as the national dog of France. Poodles are known for their characteristically regal look with a heavy curly coat. In dog shows, the breed can often be seen in a continental clip, where the fur on the face and back of the body are clipped. This grooming style was used historically to reduce the weight of the Poodle's coat as it retrieved game from waters.
The breed's intelligence and trainability has made it one of the most loved dog breeds globally. The Poodle is one of the first breeds recognized by both the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Kennel Club (of the United Kingdom) in the late 19th century.
The Poodle comes in three recognized varieties: the Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Toy Poodle. The Miniature and Toy varieties were derived by selectively breeding smaller dogs of the Standard variety. These smaller varieties were developed primarily to act as human companions versus for hunting. Though different in size, they are similar in temperament and disposition.
The AKC breed standard dictates that Standard Poodles should be 15 inches or taller in height, while Miniature Poodles are 10-15 inches in height, and the Toy Poodle stands less than 10 inches in height.
Poodles of all varieties are only recognized in singular coat colors. While this breed can most often be seen in White, Black, Grey, and Red, other recognized colors include Apricot, Blue, Cafe Au Lait (Coffee with Milk), Cream, Silver, and Silver Beige.
The Poodle is a popular choice for breeders developing designer breeds that are a mix of two or more breeds. This is for a variety of reasons, but one common factor is the hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle. When mixed with other breeds, the Poodle's low shedding nature can be passed on to the litter, resulting in low shedding or allergy-friendly puppies.
The Miniature and Toy Poodles are especially common in breeding of Poodle mixes. This allows reputable breeders to develop offspring that are smaller in size, and more appropriate for smaller spaces and apartments. Mini Poodle dogs are sometimes used as studs with female breeding dogs of larger breeds, allowing for smaller hybrid pups that are smaller in size. Another advantage of Miniature Poodles in the breeding process is that they are more genetically diverse than the Standard variety, which can help reduce incidence of some genetic problems.
While mixed breeds are not officially recognized by registries or purebred pedigrees, they are quickly becoming some of the most common dog types developed by ethical breeders. This is primarily driven by demand from families who have a preference for such mixed breeds. Some of the most popular Poodle mix breeds (also called doodles) include Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Cavapoos, Havapoos, Bernedoodles, and Aussiedoodles.

The price of a Poodle can vary significantly depending on the breeder's experience and geography, the breeding parents' pedigree, and the size and color of the puppy.
On Mawoo Pets, Standard Poodles are often listed for $1,000 to $3,000, with the most common price around $1,500. Given the demand for mini Poodle puppies, the price of Miniature and Toy Poodles puppies for sale tend to be higher, often ranging from $2,000 to $4,500, with an average price around $2,500.

Poodles make fantastic family pets. This is for a number of reasons:
There are ethical breeders across nearly every US state and Canadian province. However, given the popularity of the breed, many backyard breeders and puppy mills are also breeding this dog. These breeders are harmful to the breed as they do not follow important health and safety standards, and also easily deviate from the breed standard.
If you are searching for a reputable Poodle breeder, it is important that you research the breeder or source thoroughly before purchasing a puppy. Good breeders should offer health guarantees that cover congenital conditions, conduct early socialization of their puppies, and be open to showing you their breeding premises.
Poodles can be susceptible to some health issues such as hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, or cataracts. Conscientious breedersare careful to identify these issues in their breeding parents through genetic testing or regular veterinary checkups. They can then ensure that the right breeding parents are selected in the breeding process.
At Mawoo Pets, we have done this research for you, vetting our network of breeders for health, safety, and socialization standards. Once you find a puppy from a reputable breeder near you or nationwide, we can arrange for the travel of your puppy to your home or nearest airport.
