The Labradoodle is a combination of the Poodle and the Labrador Retriever. The breeding Poodle can be a standard, miniature, or toy Poodle, resulting in differently sized Labradoodles. While Labrador Retrievers originated in Canada and the Poodle originated in France or Germany, the Labradoodle officially originated in Australia.
The origins of the Labradoodle trace to a lady in Hawaii. This lady was in search of a guide dog that was also allergy friendly. She was not having luck finding the right match in Hawaii, and so she decided to reach out to the Australian Guide Dog Association (AGDA) to request a hypoallergenic guide dog. She selected the Australian association because if the dog were bred in Australia, it could come straight to her home without any need for a quarantine.
AGDA combined a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle of outstanding bloodline to create the first official Labradoodle litter. Since then, Labradoodles have been bred worldwide to make for hypoallergenic companions, and especially as family pets, given their intelligence, friendliness, and loyalty.
Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes and colors. As a mixed breed, a given puppy can inherit more traits from its Labrador parent or Poodle parent. This could mean significant variety in sizes, colors, and coat consistency, even amongst puppies of the same litter.
Labrador Retrievers come in three standard singular colors, asdefined by the American Kennel Club: yellow, black, and chocolate. Poodles, on the other hand, have a wider color variety, with eleven colors officially recognized by the AKC, including apricot, black, brown, red, and white. Given the color variety of these parent breeds, a Labradoodle puppy can come in a range of colors singular or mixed colors. The most common colors seen on Labradoodles are cream, red, brown, chocolate, and black.
As a hybrid breed, Labradoodles are not recognized by international breed registries such as the AKC or Kennel Club (of the UK). However, there are many breed clubs dedicated to the Labradoodle breed, such as the Australian Labradoodle Association (ALA) or the Australian Labradoodle Association UK. The Labradoodle breed can come in a miniature, medium, or standard variety.
According to the ALA breed standards, mini Labradoodle dogs weigh 15 to 28 pounds, medium Labradoodle dogs weigh 28 to 45 pounds, while standard Labradoodle dogs can weigh 45 to 60 pounds. Large Labradoodles are bred from standard Poodles, while mini Labradoodles have a toy Poodle as a parent.
Labradoodle puppies for sale can range in price from $1,000 to $3,200. The price varies depending on the bloodlines of the breeding parents, the breeder's experience, location, and the demand for Labradoodle puppies at that time.
Some breeders professionally train their Labradoodle puppies to serve as guide dogs or therapy dogs. Such puppies can cost significantly more, sometimes in excess of $10,000.
Labradoodles make fantastic family dogs. They are highly intelligent, affectionate, and loyal to their human companions. They are also wonderful with both young and older children and make great playmates for kids.
These friendly family companions are also allergy friendly as a result of their Poodle genes. The Poodle rarely ever sheds, and so Labradoodles tend to be low shedding. Given that they release little dander, this breed is a good fit for allergic family members who need hypoallergenic companions.
Labradoodles are highly intelligent and should be trained from an early age. Appropriate training and socialization will ensure that your pet stays socially engaged and well-behaved, and will help avoid unruly behavior.
The Labradoodle is a high energy breed and requires lots of exercise. A Labradoodle pup is best matched with a home that has outdoor space or a backyard, or with an active family who enjoy sports and outdoor activities. That said, a Labradoodle can make a good addition to an apartment or small living space so long as it receives adequate daily exercise.
Labradoodles are moderate barkers. As with other dogs, they tend to bark when they are excited, nervous, or alerted.
Excessive barking however can be a sign that your dog is overly anxious, stressed, or frustrated. If you observe this behavior, try to identify and address the root cause of the stress. Physical stimulation and exercise can also help reduce barking, and you can also provide training to help your pup keep his or her barking in check.
Labradoodles are typically low shedding and allergy friendly. The Poodle parent genes are extremely low shedding and if inherited, will lead to a hypoallergenic puppy.
However, a Labradoodle puppy may inherit more dominantly from the Labrador Retriever parent, making its coat more allergenic. Many Labradoodle breeders follow a well-defined breeding program that helps ensure allergy friendly coats and hypoallergenic traits.
Australian Labradoodles for instance are well-known for this trait. As such, if you are considering a Labradoodle puppy for its low allergy coat, then consider purchasing from an experienced breeder with clear bloodlines or consult your local Labradoodle Association for suggestions. If you live in the United States, you can explore resources from the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA).
Ethical Labradoodle breeders are careful to breed out common health conditions and to raise healthy, well-tempered litters. Reputable breeders are aware of the common health conditions in Labradoodles and actively weed out these conditions through genetic testing and health testing of their breeding dogs.
Common health conditions in Labradoodles include joint dysplasia, including hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, as well as congenital eye diseases such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Another common illness in Labradoodles is Addison's disease, which is an endocrine disorder.
You should consult your breeder to ensure that these common conditions have been screened for and ask for any available information on the parents' genetic profiles, pedigrees, or bloodlines. Such information can be shared with your veterinarian to help monitor any conditions that your puppy may develop over time.
