The Stabyhoun (nope, that’s not a misspelling!) is a rare and ancient dog breed that comes from the Netherlands. Weighing between 40 and 55 pounds fully grown, these dogs have a short, coarse coat that comes in a variety of colours including black, brown, and white. Sporting a distinctive, square-shaped head and a long, pointed snout, Stabyhouns have a strong and athletic build, with well-muscled legs and a thick tail. The breed is known for its high energy level, strong hunting instincts, and incredible speed and agility.

Utah has been a home for dog lovers longer than you might think! At Danger Cave, on the western state border, archaeologists have found dog bones buried next to human remains that are more than 9,000 years old. Still today, dogs and their human families love to spend time together out in nature. Visit the old stomping grounds of your canine’s ancestors in Utah’s state parks and camping areas or rent a cottage on the lake for a nice mix between nature and creature comforts. Thousands of restaurants in this state have dog-friendly patios, while hundreds of specialists are available for all your pet’s grooming and spa needs.
The Golden Retriever was nominated as Utah’s official state dog breed in 2015, but the bid was unsuccessful following a vote.
