This popular breed gets its name from the Mandarin phrase “Shih Tzu” meaning “Little Lion”. And what a fitting name, given their long hair and spunky personality! This lively puppy loves affection and a good cuddle, but also doesn’t mind being independent. They walk with an air of royalty, perhaps because they were the chosen breed to accompany Chinese emperors. They are fiercely loyal and happiest when by your side. These puppies are perfect for older couples and don’t mind other pets, as long as they don’t take away from their cuddle time with their owners. This breed remains small at 9 to 16 lbs and lives up to 16 years old.

Hawaii is a wonderful place for all people and their dogs—and that’s why it’s a bit complicated to bring a dog into the state. Health laws mean you’ll need to do some paperwork with your veterinarian before visiting. It’s worth it! Swimming, paddleboarding, boating and mountain hiking all await the two of you in beautiful Hawaii. Tackle the 1871 Trail at Pu'u O Honauna National Historic Park, or splash around in the waves under the sun at one of the state’s many dog-friendly beaches, including Dog Beach at Honokohau Harbor. When it’s mealtime, check out one of the state’s many delectable dog-friendly eateries, such as Greek Marina and Barefoot Beach Café.
The extinct Hawaiian Poi Dog guarded children—and was also baked and eaten.
Hawaiians’ favourite breed is the French Bulldog.
Hawaii is rabies free, which means all dogs entering this state must be vaccinated!
