Pointers have been bred for centuries as hunting dogs for rabbits and other small animals. These dogs get their name from their instinct to stop and “point” at prey with their noses. Standing at a height between 58 and 69 centimetres and weighing about 20 to 32 kilograms, pointers are friendly with family, friends, strangers, kids and other dogs. They are also great show dogs, thanks to their agility and intelligence. Energetic and playful, pointers do best with larger homes and yards where they can run around.

Alaska is home to some of the great natural wonders of the world, and thanks to its dog-friendly culture, you can experience many of them together with your dog! Hike the trails at the Far North Bicentennial Park in Anchorage, or the Tongass National Forest in Juneau. Your dog will also love spending an afternoon at Connor’s Bog Dog Park in Anchorage, or at the Lake Lucille Dog Park in Wasilla. If you haven’t brought your own dog with you on an Alaskan holiday, look into special hiking (or sledding) excursions with cold-weather Huskies!
A Siberian Husky named Balto led a sled team that delivered life-saving diphtheria medicine to Nome in 1925.
The Alaskan Malamute is the only pure Alaskan dog breed.
The favourite dog breed of Alaskans is the Labrador Retriever.
