The Maremma Sheepdog originates in Italy, where it was bred as a guard dog to protect sheep from wolves. The thick white coat of this breed helps it blend in with sheep, while also protecting it from cold weather conditions. This breed is energetic, independent, and intelligent, all traits key to protecting livestock. Despite their large size, Maremmas are calm and sometimes affectionately called gentle giants. Given their large size and tendency to bark, Maremmas are best raised in home with backyards or plenty of open space.
