The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all dogs. Weighing between 115 and 180 pounds, this ancient breed was used in war to drag enemy soldiers from their horses. Just as powerful and immense today, the modern Irish Wolfhound is an athletic competitor and enthusiastic pet. Of course, these big, big dogs need a big home to keep them happy! An instinctual hunter, the Wolfhound needs a strong, tall fence to keep it from becoming distracted and chasing random “prey” around the neighbourhood.

The Pennsylvania state dog is none other than the regal and formidable Great Dane, a dog breed that worked hard alongside its early European settler companions. The state legislature formalized the standing of the state dog in 1965, stating: "...WHEREAS, the physical and other attributes of the Great Dane, to wit: size, strength, beauty, intelligence, tolerance, courage, faithfulness, trustworthiness and stability exemplify those of Pennsylvania.” As for the household dog owners of Pennsylvania, their other favourites include Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and German Shepherds, plus a host of Doodle Dogs. Dog owners in the Keystone State enjoy access to miles and miles of dog-friendly hiking trails.
The Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Shows has been an (almost) annual event since 1879.
Pennsylvania allows dogs at more than 50 of its state parks.
