The charming and gentile Irish Terrier boasts a ruddy red coat and weighs 25 to 27 pounds fully grown. Though they are affectionate with kids and family, these dogs aren’t so keen on making doggy friends. Popular in Ireland since the 19th century, this breed is known for its dedication to all kinds of farm work as well as its ability to act as a family guard dog.

New Jersey’s favourite dog breeds are the Labrador Retriever, the Golden Retriever and the French Bulldog. Small breed favourites include the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the Dachshund and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. One of New Jersey’s classiest celebs, Martha Stewart, owns two French Bulldogs named Bete Noire and Creme Brûlée, plus three Chow Chows by the names of Genghis Khan, Peluche and Empress Chin.
