Before the Irish Setter, there was the Irish Red and White Setter! The all-red version became so popular that the original Irish Red and White Setter was nearly lost to the gene pool, but it is popular now as a separate breed. Bred as hunting dogs, these Setters can be a little too focused on their prey drive and need an experienced trainer to push past that instinct. Weighing between 50 and 70 pounds, Red and White Setters need space to exercise and shouldn’t be confined to an apartment.

The Pennsylvania state dog is none other than the regal and formidable Great Dane, a dog breed that worked hard alongside its early European settler companions. The state legislature formalized the standing of the state dog in 1965, stating: "...WHEREAS, the physical and other attributes of the Great Dane, to wit: size, strength, beauty, intelligence, tolerance, courage, faithfulness, trustworthiness and stability exemplify those of Pennsylvania.” As for the household dog owners of Pennsylvania, their other favourites include Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and German Shepherds, plus a host of Doodle Dogs. Dog owners in the Keystone State enjoy access to miles and miles of dog-friendly hiking trails.
The Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Shows has been an (almost) annual event since 1879.
Pennsylvania allows dogs at more than 50 of its state parks.
