Playful and fun-loving with the people who love them, German Wirehaired Pointers need constant fulfilling play and won’t be happy simply sitting around the house. The north-eastern coastal state of Massachusetts was one of the first regions of the Americas where Europeans settled a few centuries ago. When settlers came to these shores, they often brought their canine companions along with them. There were two dogs on the Mayflower, and they didn’t take the long voyage from England just to keep their families company! Dogs were working animals in the early European settlements of Massachusetts, protecting livestock from wolves, foxes and other predators. Most of those first immigrant dogs were Mastiffs, Greyhounds and English Setters. By 1784, there were an estimated 30,000 dogs in the entire state.
Massachusetts dogs Duke and Huntah have sniffed out COVID-19 at more than a dozen schools in the state.
The Massachusetts state dog is named after the capital city: the Boston Terrier.
