The Frenchton is a cross between the Boston terrier and the French bulldog. Small in stature, they stand between 28 and 35 centimeters in height and weigh about 7 to 11 kilograms. Playful and calm, these little dogs make great family pets and travelling companions. They love children and can enjoy life in smaller homes. Frenchtons are easy to groom and train, though their short fur makes them vulnerable to extreme weather. A little doggy coat in the winter, or sunscreen in the summer, might be in order.

Your canine family members are very much welcome in South Dakota, one of the United States’ most pet-friendly states. From the outdoor experience of the Braeburn Addition Off-leash Dog Area in Rapid City to the Miner Brewing Co. in Hill City, there’s something to please the tastes of any dog! Truly unique attractions, including Hartford’s 1880 Cowboy Town, allow dogs to accompany their owners on-leash to participate and learn about the history and culture of South Dakota. In addition, dozens of dog parks cater to small and big dogs alike who want to let loose and sniff a few bottoms in the afternoons.
South Dakota has not formally chosen a state dog breed…but its official wild animal is the coyote. Close enough!
The most popular name for a dog in South Dakota is Louie.
Labrador Retrievers are this state’s most beloved breed.
