Chongqings are one of the oldest dog breeds and originate from the Chongqing region of China. They have a muscular build and weigh about 40 to 55 pounds. The Chongqing dog is protective in its nature, and tihs temperament stems from its history as a guard and hunting dog. Even today, this breed is used as a police or military dog in China. Chongqing Dogs are loyal companions and can make excellent family guard dogs. However, these dogs can have a stubborn mindset, which can make them difficult to train. The north-eastern coastal state of Massachusetts was one of the first regions of the Americas where Europeans settled a few centuries ago. When settlers came to these shores, they often brought their canine companions along with them. There were two dogs on the Mayflower, and they didn’t take the long voyage from England just to keep their families company! Dogs were working animals in the early European settlements of Massachusetts, protecting livestock from wolves, foxes and other predators. Most of those first immigrant dogs were Mastiffs, Greyhounds and English Setters. By 1784, there were an estimated 30,000 dogs in the entire state.
