This unique breed is well-known for its ability to withstand rough, icy waters. They are often seen at AKC competitions because of their prowess. Although active and affectionate, they are one of the quieter breeds. They love their owners and can be protective of their family. They are a great family dog and love to play. They are considered a large breed, weighing at 55 to 80 lbs and living to around 12 years old.

The Pennsylvania state dog is none other than the regal and formidable Great Dane, a dog breed that worked hard alongside its early European settler companions. The state legislature formalized the standing of the state dog in 1965, stating: "...WHEREAS, the physical and other attributes of the Great Dane, to wit: size, strength, beauty, intelligence, tolerance, courage, faithfulness, trustworthiness and stability exemplify those of Pennsylvania.” As for the household dog owners of Pennsylvania, their other favourites include Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and German Shepherds, plus a host of Doodle Dogs.
