The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is an ancient resident of the Caucasus Mountains, where it worked as a livestock herder, hunter and guard. Weighing in at 100-110 pounds, the Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a big, burly and fluffy dog with a double coat to keep it warm in the mountains. Instinctually territorial and protective of their families, Caucasian Shepherds are best suited to cooler climates and larger homes. The Pennsylvania state dog is none other than the regal and formidable Great Dane, a dog breed that worked hard alongside its early European settler companions. The state legislature formalized the standing of the state dog in 1965, stating: "...WHEREAS, the physical and other attributes of the Great Dane, to wit: size, strength, beauty, intelligence, tolerance, courage, faithfulness, trustworthiness and stability exemplify those of Pennsylvania.” As for the household dog owners of Pennsylvania, their other favourites include Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and German Shepherds, plus a host of Doodle Dogs. Dog owners in the Keystone State enjoy access to miles and miles of dog-friendly hiking trails.
The Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Shows has been an (almost) annual event since 1879.
Pennsylvania allows dogs at more than 50 of its state parks.
