These proud dogs are often confused with the German Shepherd, mostly because they are also used by the military and police. They can focus on moving objects, making them perfect for such work. They were originally bred to be herding dogs. Given this, they are very active dogs that need socialization and obedience training, particularly if you live in an apartment or don’t have a lot of land space. They are great for families especially if you have children they can chase around. This breed can get anywhere from 40 to 80 lbs and live to be around 14 to 16 years old.

Mississippi’s reputation as the Hospitality State is not just for people—it’s for dogs, too! From beaches to breweries, there’s plenty to do with your furry best pal whether you’re just visiting or here as a full-time resident. The two of you can share a day of sun, surf and sand at one of the state’s many dog-friendly beaches, including Lakeshore Beach and Waveland Beach at Bay Saint Louis, and the white sands of Front Beach at Ocean Springs. When you’re feeling hungry, stop by one of the dog-friendly restaurant patios and end the afternoon with a trip to a pet-friendly brewery like Lazy Magnolia Brewery in Kiln.
