The Akita is simultaneously remarkable for its muscular stature and friendly face. Standing 24 to 28 inches high and weighing anywhere from 70 to 130 pounds, the sturdy Akita traces its lineage to Japan. These dogs have a thick and hardy double coat that serves them well in cool and cold climates. Akitas have a natural connection with humans but need socialization during puppyhood before being around kids and other animals. The Japanese revere the Akita as a loyal family protector.
