People in England first bred the Jack Russell Terrier more than 200 years ago for foxhunting, and you can see evidence of that purpose in this little dog's energy and single-mindedness. Since Jack Russell terriers were custom-bred for many estates, they range in size quite a bit. Most stand between 10 and 15 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 13 and 17 pounds. A clever dog best adopted by an adult, the Jack Russell Terrier is independent and requires experienced owners to train it effectively.
