The iconic Basset Hound is a born small game hunter with long, floppy ears and short, sturdy legs. Weighing 50 to 65 pounds as adults, these dogs make great family pets. In fact, this centuries-old hunting breed is well known for its tendency towards laziness and the cuddly couch potato lifestyle. Basset Hounds may not always let you know when its time for some exercise, so owners need to make sure they get their daily walks! Hounds are friendly with people and gentle with kids.

Idaho is well-known as a dog-friendly place to live in—or travel to—thanks to its millions of dog lovers and plentiful dog-centric businesses. Urban Idaho is packed with beautiful dog parks where your furry family members can run and play off-leash, including the Nampa Dog Park and the Military Reserve Flood Basin Dog Park. An Idaho dog owner can also run errands, take a shopping trip or go out for dinner with their pup at their side the whole time. Looking for a way for the two of you to get exercise and fresh air together? Try the state’s Greenbelt trail, which runs for 25 miles along the Boise River.
Fifty-eight percent of Idaho households have at least one dog.
The state’s own Idaho Shag dog originated on the eastern side of the state, and is believed to be a mix of herding breeds.
Boise, capital of Idaho, is considered one of the country’s best cities for dogs.
