How to Groom a Pomeranian: Coat Care, Tools & Maintenance Tips

Pomeranians are tiny fluffballs with big personalities—and equally big grooming needs. Their iconic double coat is eye-catching, but it also requires routine care to stay clean, soft, and tangle-free. Without regular brushing and maintenance, a Pom’s thick fur can quickly become matted, dirty, or even painful.

In this guide, we’ll break down how to groom a Pomeranian at home, what tools to use, and how to keep their coat healthy, manageable, and looking fabulous.

Why Grooming Your Pomeranian Is So Important

A Pomeranian’s dense double coat—made up of a soft undercoat and a coarser outer layer—serves as insulation and protection. However, it also makes them prone to mats, excessive shedding, and even skin infections if not properly cared for.

Grooming your Pom regularly:

  • Prevents mats and tangles from forming

  • Reduces loose hair and shedding in your home

  • Keeps the coat shiny and free from debris

  • Helps regulate body temperature

  • Strengthens the bond between you and your pup

Understanding the Pomeranian Coat

Pomeranians have a double coat, which means they shed seasonally (especially in spring and fall) and require regular grooming to manage fluff and prevent tangles.

During shedding season, daily brushing is ideal to remove loose undercoat and avoid matting.

Grooming Tools You’ll Need

To care for your Pomeranian at home, you’ll want a few essentials:

  • Slicker brush – Loosens tangles and removes loose hair

  • Pin brush – Helps fluff and smooth the outer coat

  • Metal comb – Useful for detangling and working through mats

  • Undercoat rake – Especially helpful during shedding season

  • Dog-safe shampoo & conditioner – Use gentle, moisturizing formulas

  • Blow dryer (low heat) – Fluffs and dries the coat thoroughly

  • Blunt-tipped scissors – Trim paws, ears, and sanitary areas

  • Nail clippers or grinder – Keep nails short and neat

  • Ear cleaner – Prevents wax buildup and infections

How to Groom a Pomeranian at Home

1. Brush Before You Bathe

Brushing before a bath is essential. If you bathe your Pom while their coat is tangled, the mats will tighten and become harder to remove.

2. Use Lukewarm Water and Gentle Shampoo

Pomeranians have sensitive skin, so use a gentle dog shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Follow up with a conditioner to soften and protect the coat.

3. Towel and Blow Dry

Gently towel-dry, then use a blow dryer on low or cool heat. Brush the coat as you dry to prevent tangles and restore the fluffy look.

4. Trim Where Needed

Pomeranians don’t need a full haircut, but a light trim helps keep them neat:

  • Trim around the paws, ears, and rear for cleanliness

  • Avoid shaving or clipping the double coat—it can damage regrowth

5. Clean Ears and Clip Nails

Use a vet-approved ear cleaning solution once a week. Trim nails every 2–3 weeks to avoid discomfort and posture issues.

Grooming Schedule for Pomeranians

Grooming TaskRecommended Frequency
Brushing3–5 times per week (daily during shedding)
BathingEvery 4–6 weeks
Professional GroomingEvery 6–8 weeks (light trims only)
Nail TrimmingEvery 2–3 weeks
Ear CleaningWeekly
Teeth Brushing2–3 times per week

Common Pomeranian Grooming Challenges

  • Mats behind ears and on thighs – Brush thoroughly and gently

  • Undercoat shedding – Use an undercoat rake during blowout season

  • Sensitive skin – Choose products made for small or sensitive breeds

  • “Shaving” damage – Never fully shave a Pom; it can harm coat regrowth

When to Visit a Professional Groomer

While much of your Pom’s grooming can be handled at home, professional groomers can help with:

  • Feather trimming (paws, tail, and ears)

  • Mat removal

  • Sanitary area grooming

  • Coat shaping (never full-body shaving!)

  • Blowouts during shedding season

Schedule visits every 6–8 weeks, or more often if your Pom’s coat is high maintenance.

Tips for a Fluff-Tastic Grooming Experience from our Breeders

  • Start young: get your Pom used to grooming as a puppy

  • Use treats and praise to keep grooming positive

  • Make brushing a bonding time, not a chore

  • Stick to a routine—consistency makes it easier for both of you
