๐Ÿงฌ Origins of Each Breed

Siberian Husky

Originating in Siberia and later developed in Alaska, the Siberian Husky was bred by the Chukchi people as a sled-pulling, endurance dog capable of surviving extreme cold. They're known for their thick double coat, almond-shaped eyes (often blue or heterochromatic), and high stamina.

Alaskan Klee Kai

Developed in the 1970s in Alaska, the Alaskan Klee Kai was bred by Linda Spurlin to be a companion-sized version of the Alaskan Husky. By mixing Huskies with smaller breeds like the Schipperke and American Eskimo Dog, the result was a dog that looked like a Husky but was far better suited for household living.

It was officially recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1997.

๐Ÿ“ Size & Appearance Differences

The most obvious difference between these breeds is size:

  • Siberian Huskies are large dogs, with males weighing up to 60 lbs.

  • Alaskan Klee Kais are small dogs, with adults often under 20 lbs.

Both share the classic Husky look: erect ears, curled tails, double coats, and bright, expressive eyes. However, the Klee Kai has a more fox-like face and finer bone structure, while the Siberian Husky has a broader, more powerful build.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Customer Insight:

“We fell in love with the Husky look but live in a condo in Toronto. Thanks to Mawoo Pets, we found a Klee Kai who fits our space and lifestyle perfectly!” — Joanna M., Mawoo Pets customer

๐Ÿง  Temperament & Behavior

Siberian Huskies

  • Friendly with strangers and great in multi-dog households.

  • Independent and stubborn—not easy to train.

  • High prey drive: may chase small animals.

  • Rarely bark, but may howl or “talk.”

Alaskan Klee Kai

  • Cautious and more reserved with strangers.

  • Loyal and affectionate with their families.

  • Alert and more vocal—some are prone to excessive barking.

  • Easier to train than Huskies but still have a strong-willed streak.

Observation from Husky & Klee Kai Parents:
Both breeds are highly intelligent, but Siberian Huskies often try to "outsmart" their owners. Klee Kais, while clever, tend to be more eager to please in one-on-one settings.

๐Ÿ• Energy Needs & Exercise

Both dogs are high-energy breeds, but the level is different.

  • Siberian Huskies were bred to run for miles and need 1.5–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily.

  • Alaskan Klee Kais have plenty of energy too but can be satisfied with daily walks, play, and brain games.

Without enough stimulation, both breeds can become destructive. A bored Husky might dig or escape. A bored Klee Kai may bark excessively or become anxious.

Since the Klee Kai is a newer breed with a more limited gene pool, responsible breeding is especially important.

๐Ÿ  Which Breed is Better for You?

Choose a Siberian Husky if:

  • You want a highly social dog that loves everyone.

  • You live in a house with a yard and lead an active lifestyle.

  • You're okay with a dog that sheds heavily and may be stubborn to train.

Choose an Alaskan Klee Kai if:

  • You live in an apartment or smaller home.

  • You prefer a more reserved but loyal dog.

  • You’re looking for a dog with Husky looks in a compact body.

๐Ÿถ Bonus Breed: What’s a Miniature Husky?

Some people searching for "small Huskies" aren't referring to Klee Kais, but the Miniature Husky, a smaller version of the Siberian Husky.

The Miniature Husky is not a separate breed—it's a scaled-down Siberian Husky, bred by selectively pairing the smallest Huskies over multiple generations. They:

  • Weigh between 20–35 lbs

  • Have the same looks and personality as full-sized Huskies

  • Are sometimes more adaptable to smaller homes

Many people confuse Miniature Huskies with Klee Kais, but they’re not the same. Mini Huskies are just small Huskies. Klee Kais are a distinct breed with a very different temperament and lineage.

Final Thoughts

Both the Alaskan Klee Kai and Siberian Husky are stunning, intelligent, and loyal — but they fit very different households.

  • Choose the Siberian Husky if you want a sociable, athletic companion and have time for training and grooming.

  • Choose the Klee Kai if you need a smaller, loyal dog that’s alert and smart — ideal for apartments or first-time dog owners who want a Husky look without the size.

No matter which one you choose, if you are looking to bring a puppy home an ethical breeder, we are here to guide and support you.
